Sun and Vitamin D Background and Image Map with 2 Linked Hotspots

A sun angle of at least 50 degrees is considered by some to be necessary for vitamin D absorption through the skin. Angles can vary depending on the city, day of the year, and time of the day.

What Determines the Sun's Angle?

City

A city and its latitude and longitude will affect the angle of the sun. Cities in the southern U.S. will enjoy more 50 degree days during the year.

Day of the Year

The day of the year will affect the angle of the sun. In Phoenix, there are over 100 winter days when the sun never reaches 50 degrees.

Time of the Day

The time of the day will affect the angle of the sun. As the sun rises, so does its angle or elevation. As it sets, its angle decreases.

Phoenix Arizona enjoys 50+ degree sun over 200 days per year. October 9 through March 3 are the exceptions. Even though there is an advantage to getting vitamin D, there is also a risk of skin damage during these high-elevation days. However, when the sun is lower than 50 degrees, there may be little or no benefit and only increased risks from sun exposure. On these days, it may be better to take a vitamin D supplement. Phoenix Sun Tracker can help you determine when you may want to avoid the sun as well as when you may want to get the best sun.
